During a recent *Meet and Greet* session of the Techie Seniors PH community, participants Juliet N., a stay-at-home mom working from home; Ed R., who keeps his mind sharp with tech in his senior years; and Jnet R., a photographer and active older adult, shared their stories and insights on how technology makes a difference in their everyday lives.
The title of Meet & Greet #30 was “Ang Pagtanda at Aking Digital na Buhay” (Aging and My Digital Life). The event gave participants a chance to share stories about their digital lives, including how they use technology and the challenges they’ve faced as older adults or senior citizens. It was also an opportunity to reconnect with their classmates in the Techie Seniors PH community.
Technology as an Everyday Companion
The conversation opened with a question about technology’s role in daily life. Juliet G. highlighted how digital tools enable communication with family, especially those who are far away, as well as providing conveniences like online payments and ordering. Ed R. uses digital tools like calendars and alarms to manage his “mini-projects” and stay organized. Jnet R. noted that technology has simplified work, particularly for webinars, and has even led to opportunities to join online groups for her photography and “Techie Seniors”.
Independence Through Digital Tools
The participants agreed that technology has helped them maintain their independence. Juliet G. pointed out that ride-sharing, delivery apps, and online shopping platforms have been a significant help. She emphasized that online banking and payment platforms offer the greatest convenience, as they eliminate the need to wait in long lines to pay bills. Ed R. added that the ability to research on his own has reduced his reliance on others, which he values since asking for help can sometimes lead to discrimination. Meanwhile, Jnet R. shared that she can freely express her thoughts online, allowing her to protect herself from bashers and build trust and credibility as a photographer hobbyist.
Challenges and Concerns in using Technology
Despite the benefits, navigating new technology can be challenging. Jnet R. mentioned the difficulty of keeping up with the rapid pace of system upgrades, especially for smartphone apps and features. Ed R. pointed out that his main challenge is the growing threat from ‘bad players’ such as scammers and hackers, especially for senior citizens who are often targeted and victimized. Juliet G. explained that learning new technology can be difficult because you start with zero knowledge and must take the time to understand its features and test whether they work for you.
Access to Services
The group discussed how technology has improved access to important services, though it hasn’t made everything fully seamless. Juliet G. observed that while online platforms provide access to data from services like SSS and Pag-IBIG, essential processes like applications often still require a physical visit to an office. In her view, only “one step” of a process has been automated, not the “entire process”. In contrast, Ed R. and Jnet R. felt that banking services have seen significant improvement. Jnet R. also noted the benefits of delivery services and the use of apps like GCash and eGov for travel.
Entertainment and Leisure
Technology also plays a role in the seniors’ leisure time. Juliet G. enjoys digital games such as coloring by number, word puzzles, and Scrabble. For streaming and music, she uses Prime, Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube Music. Ed R. turns to YouTube for sports and plays Scrabble and Microsoft Solitaire for mental exercise. Jnet R. prefers Spotify and Netflix. On average, they spend about one to three hours a day using technology for entertainment and leisure.
Online Safety and Social Interaction
Online safety is a top concern for the group. Jnet R. is very concerned about privacy and avoids certain public sites. Juliet G. is worried about her accounts being hacked and, as a result, she is protective of her passwords. Similarly, Ed R. is concerned and no longer posts on Facebook, feeling it’s safer when he is not seen online. While scammers are getting better at manipulating their victims, the host noted that the participants’ digital skills in protecting themselves against online threats are also improving.
Technology has also reshaped social connections. Participants noted that they use apps like Messenger and Viber for communication, but in a “selective” way, primarily with family and a trusted circle of friends.
A Glimpse into the Future
When asked about their wishes for future technological support, Juliet G. hoped for fully online government services that would eliminate the need for office visits and long lines. Jnet R. wished for continued technological advancements with “caution or boundaries” and better internet connectivity. Ed R. expressed his desire for human support to be augmented by AI and robots. However, the group ultimately agreed that personal, human interaction is still essential.
The session concluded with gratitude among participants, reflecting the spirit of learning and camaraderie. While challenges exist, the Techie Seniors PH community proves that age is no barrier to embracing technology. With openness, patience, and support, seniors are not just adapting to the digital age—they are thriving in it.
